It’s interesting when you look at Jesus in the New Testament. One page you may find Him healing the sick and the next page He is arguing with the Pharisees. One minute He is teaching in the synagogue and the next He is turning the tables in the temple. Overall Jesus seemed to be a pretty inconsistant guy when it came to His actions. On the outside, you might have even called Him a hypocrite, a lunatic or “demon-posessed” but when you hear Jesus, He says “”If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
Perfect is turning tables, upsetting the religious majority, poor (well, if you sell all your posessions and give to the poor) and following some carpenter who forgives sins.
But let’s not forget the motives… Turning the tables was bringing about justice in the temple where corruption was rampant, speaking the hard truth, acquiring riches that will not fade away with this world, and receiving the gift of a perfect sacrifice for our sins. Oh, but the motives… by themselves, didn’t make sense to the people who were looking on.
