After Vincent Van Gogh moved to Paris, his style of painting changed considerably.  The French Impressionists had a profound impact on him.  Color suddenly became important where before subtle tonal shifts would hint at ideas of color.  The muddy palette became vibrant.  I have to imagine that at this point the hard arduous labor of painting that Vincent spoke of in a letter to his brother Theo became somewhat lightened.
