Body Art: Using Your Spouse as a Canvas
Occasionally I get asked by someone to face paint for a party or event. If I am available, I do usually say yes. Kids are awesome. They are quite forgiving if you don’t get the flower exactly perfect, they usually want to have whiskers and happy faces are easy to draw. I’ve also always embraced those face painting
sessions as a great time to improve my own art. You have to be quick because kids by nature are bored if you take 10 minutes to do their face. You also get asked to do random butterflies, trees, Santa, make them look like a tiger, favorite sports team logos, you name it. I have often wondered what I could do if I had some time to really have fun with this medium.
My wife is the kind of person who really enjoys art herself so she was pretty eager to have me use her as a canvas. (Plus, I think there is a sensual aspect of this that you might want to consider with your spouse.)
I used the Derwent Watercolor Pencils for the rich colors they provide. I didn’t have the new Inktense Watercolor pencils that you can buy now, but if anyone tries these send me a pic. I’d like to see if they are as good as they say.
I decided I would start small and see how it went before I tried anything else. So I did a little flower scene on my wife’s belly. (Yes, it’s her belly button in the pic)
Note: My wife is a bit of a conservationist type, so I chose flowers and used every shade of green in my set of pencils because I love my wife.
After that was done, she wanted to try her hand at it too. Well, it was my hand actually, but her hand did the drawing. She was quite influenced by the Celtic art apparently for mine. I told her it looked like Celtic Christmas.
Then it was time for a larger painting on my wife. This time it was on her back.
I am not sure why but sunflowers came to mind…
